About Yaklom Hill Lodge, Ratanakiri, Cambodia

How have we got into today?

Yaklom Hill Lodge commenced its operation on 16 November 2002. However, preparation of such operation dates back to some time in 1997 when the now plot of land (located in Yaklom commune of Ban Lung district, and 5 km. east of Ban Lung town on National Road number 78) was acquired. At that time, as the fallow land for a number of years, vegetation in the area had largely suffered annually by serious burning, animal grazi…

Birds of Yaklom Hill Lodge

More than 90 per cent of Yaklom Hill Lodge's land is covered with the forest canopy. And so the diversity of native plant species have been providing all year-round habitat and foods for small wildlife, such as birds. With our policy of “no hunting” in the lodge, all the birds and other wildlife here can have freedom of movement, and live here peacefully. This is witnessed by the increasing number of bird species.

1. From Phnom Penh

By air : At the time of this update (March 2009), there is no commercial flight from Phnom Penh (or any other place in Cambodia) to Ratanakiri and vice versa. Cambodia is once again trying to launch a new national flag carrier and we are very keen to know that, once established, if Ratanakiri will be part of its domestic flight service.

Ratanakiri is a large province and almost all of the areas is covered by forest, and uninhabited. This reveals that natural resources and ecological systems are largely remaining undiscovered and undisturbed by man. Something that many are worried that if no timely and appropriate measures are enforced, the similar thing may take place as those in Cambodia neighbors the over-exploitation and subsequent degradation (or even extinction) of natural resources and ecological systems. In order to help…

What to do & what to see in Ratanakiri?

With the commercial flights from Phnom Penh having been suspended, most of visitors now travel to Ratanakiri overland. The roads to Ratanakiri from Phnom Penh via Kampong Cham, Kratie, and Stung Treng are paved. The last 140 km of national road #78 from O'Pongmorn intersection (20 km east of Stung Treng) to Ban Lung is still unpaved, but has been graded and improved. Bus services now (by 4 companies) operate all year-round, making Ratanakiri reachable fr…
